Is something truly a treat if it causes you harm? It's ironic that some of the most common things we call “treats” in society also cause individuals some of their greatest personal pain.
There is strong research supporting the connection between poor diet and diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, weakened immune systems, cancer, autoimmune diseases, psychological disorders, emotional mood swings, and a host of other illnesses. Additionally, the overindulgence of unhealthful foods is also feeding some of our greatest societal problems such as high health care costs, carbon dioxide emissions, and greenhouse gases.
We want to provide people with another option. We think it's possible to give someone a treat without stabbing them in the back (or in the heart ;). Like a true friend, a true treat should serve you long term. Using whole, natural, health-promoting ingredients, our treats not only taste delicious, but promote health, longevity, and well-being.
We have created easy to assemble dry mix goods that allow you to make delicious baked goods in your home without the use of refined sugar or oil. Our products are made with simple ingredients you would find in nature and sweetened only with fruit! We want people to be able to celebrate life and promote life at the same time. With True Treats, you can have your cake and eat it too.
What Makes Us Different.
To our knowledge, we are the first to offer dry mixes to make treats that are only sweetened with fruit.
Our recipes are made with simple, whole, natural ingredients including whole grains, nuts, and fruit (no refined sugar).
Research supports that the dried fruit we use is the healthiest sweetener available. Our dried fruit has more antioxidants than traditional alternatives to refined sugar such as raw cane sugar, plant saps/syrups (eg, maple syrup, agave nectar), and honey. Our dried fruit has a wide range of essential nutrients and potential health benefits.
In addition to not using refined sugar, we don’t use oil, preservatives, chemicals, or ingredients you can’t pronounce.
Our products are free from many common allergies including wheat, eggs, and dairy.
We are driven by a cause. We are focused on making a long-term difference. We measure our performance not just by sales, but by our comprehensive impact on people and the planet (triple bottom line).

Which is a more important cause? Decreasing heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, autoimmune disease, obesity, childhood obesity, psychological disorders, depression, anxiety, high healthcare costs, greenhouse gases, or carbon dioxide emissions? What about improving focus, vitality, or energy? What if you could help all at the same time?
Her entire life Elisa knew she wanted to make a difference in the world, but she didn't know the best way to focus her efforts. Elisa studied non-profit management and recreational therapy in college. She worked with numerous non-profits including homeless shelters, hospitals, and mental health facilities. In an effort to maximize her intentions to make a difference, Elisa attended the University of Pennsylvania and received a graduate degree in Positive Psychology (the study of well-being). She worked with Martin Seligman, one of the top researchers in the field and studied from a scientific perspective of what brings people meaning, purpose, and well-being in their lives.
Simultaneously, Elisa was having her own health struggles. In an effort to increase her own health, she began to study nutrition and how foods impact people. She was SHOCKED to learn the degree to which diet influences the health, well-being, and fate of an individual. As she changed her own diet, she immediately began to notice her symptoms improve. She saw hundreds of other people get better as they changed what they put in their bodies. A more healthful diet not only greatly decreased physical illness but also energized people to be their very best selves. Furthermore, the diet that unbiased research seemed to suggest was the healthiest, also seemed to be the best for the planet. How was it possible that diet could help so many things simultaneously? Helping all the things listed above- Elisa felt like focusing on nutrition could be one of the most impactful ways she could make a difference. She thought about the amount of pain that could be alleviated if diet-related illnesses disappeared. Her own grandfather died of heart disease at a young age, and with the right information, it's possible he could still be alive and thriving. Elisa was excited about what certain foods could do for individuals' and societies' overall happiness and well-being.
As a positive psychologist, she knew people (and herself) couldn't just be told what not to eat, but that people (and herself) needed a positive alternative. Seeing societies' and her own dependent relationship on unhealthful foods, Elisa first sought to find other ways to help herself and others celebrate life without desserts at all. As a mother of 3 young children, however, she also understood that food treats play an important role in our society and she didn't want her children (or herself) to feel deprived. It then became Elisa's difficult (and fun!) task to make treats using only health-promoting ingredients. It was also important to Elisa that she develop recipes that were easy enough for non-cooks to follow and cheap enough to be accessible to most.
After hundreds of hours of experimentation, True Treats was born.
We never planned on owning a business, but we've always been set on making a difference.
